What to look at in travel insurance

Travel insurance is easy to buy and easy to fail at claim time. Read exclusions first, keep claim documents, check existing cover and cover limits.

Why take it

The core of travel insurance is medical cost, not lost luggage or delays. In some countries a single emergency room visit can exceed the entire cost of the trip, and if transport home becomes necessary the figure gains another digit. Late baggage is an inconvenience; medical bills can reach a scale that affects life after the trip. If you are going somewhere with expensive healthcare, or planning activities such as skiing or diving, insurance matters even more. Accidents do not care how short the trip is.

Read the exclusions first

Choosing a policy invites comparing cover amounts, but exclusions are what actually cause problems. What is not covered sits near the back of the terms, and most failed claims fall there. If an activity you plan is on the exclusion list, check whether an add-on covering it is available.

  • Conditions existing before purchase
  • Hazardous activities such as some water and snow sports, or climbing
  • Incidents involving alcohol
  • Riding a motorcycle without the correct licence
  • Regions under a travel warning

Documents a claim needs

Treatment abroad requires a diagnosis, receipts and a record of what was done. These are very hard to obtain later if you do not collect them locally. Theft needs a police report, and delayed baggage needs a report issued by the airline. In every case, the point is gathering the paperwork on the spot. Photograph every document and keep the originals. Documents in a foreign language may need translating, so ask the insurer in advance what format it needs.

Check for cover you already have

Some credit cards provide travel cover when the flight is paid with that card, and carrier or airline membership tiers sometimes include it. Such cover often has narrow conditions and low limits, so confirm the scope rather than relaxing because it exists. On a family trip, check that every companion is covered, and whether card-linked cover applies only to the cardholder.

When to buy

Most policies can only be bought before departure and not once you have left. Handling it alongside flights and accommodation is the safe habit. Cancellation cover in particular usually only works if bought soon after booking, because reasons already foreseeable at purchase are excluded. For long stays, study abroad or working holidays, an ordinary travel policy may not be enough and a separate product may be needed. Some countries require specific cover as a visa condition, so check that country's official guidance.

Cover limits and how you get paid

Two policies with "medical cover" can pay out very differently depending on the limit, the excess and how payment works. Some insurers arrange to pay the hospital directly; with others you pay first and claim after you get home. If you have to pay first, think about whether your card limit can handle a large bill. Also check whether your domestic health cover pays for treatment abroad; often it does not. It makes sense to set the cover amount by the cost of healthcare at your destination.

What to do when something happens

Under stress it is easy to forget the order of things, so learn it in advance. Keep the insurer's emergency assistance number both in your phone and on paper.

  • If life is at risk, call the local emergency number first
  • Call the insurer's emergency line and follow its guidance
  • Get the medical report, receipts and treatment record on the spot
  • For theft, get a police report from the local police
  • Check the claim deadline and file as soon as you are home

How to read this guide

Cover and conditions differ by product and insurer, and the terms of the same product can be revised. This guide is general information about what to check; whether something is actually covered is decided by the policy wording and product documents of the policy you buy. The surest approach is to ask the insurer directly before buying and keep the answer. If you have a medical condition or are worried about your health, talk to a doctor before you travel. Insurance is a contract to carry a risk on your behalf, so choose by whether the cover fits your trip rather than by the lowest price.
